Valentino Garavani was born in 1932 in Lombardy, Italy. He was interested in fashion from a young age, and at age 17 he moved to Paris to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. From 1957 to 1959, Valentino worked in designer Guy Laroche's atelier until embarking on his journey alone.
Valentino's debut took place in 1962 in Florence, the Italian fashion capital of the time. Valentino gained popularity in 1967 after releasing their “no colour” collection which consisted of white, beige, and ivory apparels.
Valentino Garavani was close friends with Jacklyn Kennedy-Onassis and attributes much of his success to her. After leaving the White House following her husband President Kennedy’s death, Jackie moved back to New York and in 1964, Valentino arrived in New York to present his clothes. Jackie loved them all so much she ordered six haute couture dresses and began wearing Valentino almost exclusively, for several years. One of the most memorable Valentino designs she wore was her wedding dress by Valentino when she married Aristotle Onassis in 1968.
